Christmas Luxe Wishlist

I want a set of pearls.

A real, beautiful, classic set that a lady would wear. I have always desired a set of pearls. I never wanted to buy them for myself for some reason, though. I imagined they would be given to me in memory of a special event... like from my father on my wedding day or inherited from a great grandmother. Perhaps they would be gifted to me by a beau captivated with them as he is with me. Regardless.

I want a (Michael Kors) watch.

A real, beautiful, classic... eh, you get the drift. It's been 20 years almost since I've owned one and I've held out long enough. I think know I'm old enough to handle the responsibility now. (background: I was given a Micky Mouse watch by my Dad & Mom when I was 10... the main thing I remember is how quickly I lost it. I've been afraid to own one ever since... literally.)

I want diamond earrings.

I want a purse.

A ridiculously priced (in my opinion) gift that will be given to me just because I would never spend the dime myself and sometimes life's special occasions call for such a thing.

Sick Day (and morning and night)

UGH

Not much for accomplishing anything today. What a waste! Unless you happen to be my Hulu Queue... to which I owe a big thank you to keeping me entertained all day. I had a friend tell me once that they didn't mind sick days so much because it gave them a perfect excuse for wasting the day watching television (ahem, Beth). I second that!

Quite frankly I'm not in the mood to do much... or think much. However, to keep from letting today be a complete bust I have picked a completely random memory to share with you! This video is really adorable and totally worth watching. This fall while at the carnival (for the first time) with Aiden Gray, he surprised me and quite a few other parents as he marched his little behind up the steps to the giant slide. I love I captured his face of hesitation at the top and then the switch to determination as he rode the slide down. I was able to get a few photos from it... you can see his terror! But as you will also see, it didn't stop him any from asking 'Can I do it again, Mom!?' I love my little dare devil!

what SHE wore

This is more of a post about what Beth wore. Beth = Awesome! She's a dear friend who shares a love of music, culture, and most important to this post... FASHION. She blew me away the other day when she showed up wearing this amazingly cute cropped jacket! Or so it seemed. She'd actually been thrifting and GUESS WHAT!? She found this most adorable little boys blazer

I honestly would have spent a hot minute figuring out how to acquire such an effortlessly chic look. She delighted me by sharing not one but three looks where she is rocking the few boy's blazers she's found.

We all know what the best form of flattery is, right? Right! Copycatting (is that even grammatically correct!? meh) So here's my take. I spent a bit of time in my local thrift store before remembering that I was on a mission and headed straight for the little boys section. Here is my $2 score:

Not bad, eh? I was pretty proud of this outfit! I wore it on a date with my Baby Daddy last Friday night... before we maxed our credit cards, got kicked out of the bar, and then hit the boulevard. hahaha

Boys Buy Beer! Lesson: 1

Phil knows beer. His wife and I have been friends for years and Brett and I have really enjoyed becoming closer friends of theirs over the past few months. While we were out on a double lunch date Sunday, I asked Phil if he would share is knowledge of brews and suggest a few favorites with my readers who were looking for an alternative Christmas gift for their beaus. He took the task with pleasure (with a grinning Brett being a willing taste tester) and has offered not one but 3 posts of information to share! So if your guy likes light, medium, or dark beers... you (and him) are in for a treat; served with a world of knowledge! This is the first of a 3 week series. Up first this week: light brews.

Change can be hard, but let’s face it; the same old bland flavored beer just isn’t cutting it anymore.

This Holiday Season, why not treat your guy to some new (or tried and true) beers! Some may be familiar, some may sound weird; but all of them are delicious in their own unique way. I hope that within this list, you’re able to try at least a couple (why not all?) of these quality beers this holiday season, and on throughout the year. Most of the beers included are available year-round, though availability may depend your location. I live on the East Coast United States, and most of these are available all over the U.S.- if not, just bug your local beer store until they get it in for you!

First off, let’s quickly run through some beer definitions to make it easier to work through this small, essential guide for that perfect, fridge-stuffer this season:

ABVThis means how much alcohol is in the brew. Your average beer is around 5%; and your average wine is around 12%.
Hops – This is a plant that’s used to provide a bitter flavor to beers. Historically, hops were used to help preserve beer during long transports by ship from England to Indian colonies. The taste of hops in beer grew in time, and is now considered an essential element in brewing. India Pale Ale’s or IPA’s are the representative of this trend.
BUIThis determines how many “Bittering Units are in a beer. Often this is used when describing a “hoppy” beer (a plant used to make beer have a more bitter taste). Typically, you’ll only really want to know this number when buying a beer that’s specially made to have a “hoppier” or more bitter  flavor, like an IPA (India Pale Ale)
Mouth-FeelThis describes how the beer sits on the pallet. For example; milk has a much different “mouth-feel” from a soda. Soda has a much more crisp and clean mouth feel, where-as milk could be described has having a more malty mouth-feel.
MaltyThis is a term to describe a beer with a full body. Think of it like drinking a “malt milk-shake” to understand the term. A more malty beer will have a thicker “mouth-feel”, and typically tends to be a little sweeter.

*Some beers are meant to be enjoyed at warmer temperatures- Icing these kinds of beers down to frigid temperatures often hides a lot of subtle notes and hints that the brewer meant for you to experience and enjoy! Always follow the recommended serving instructions on the bottle. If there are none, then it’s safe to assume normal fridge temperature is the best way to enjoy.

Now on to some great brews!

Allagash Belgian Style Wheat

This is a delicious un-filtered wheat beer. It’s cloudy in color, yet clear and crisp in taste. Notes of Nutmeg, citrusy combinations of lemon, orange, and tangerine give it a wonderful earthy flavor and mouth-feel. This delightful Belgian has a really nice, light texture with no overbearing flavors.

Truly a beer for all occasions, it’s light enough to enjoy on a hot day in mid-summer, yet provides enough depth and character to be a wonderful brew for those chilly, autumn nights by the fire .

I was greatly impressed with the character and flavor of this beer. Not overly heavy, syrupy or bitter; it’s a wonderful balance of spice and citrus, and a perfect year-round beer.

Brewery: Allagash Brewing Company, Portland, Maine
ABV: 5.0%
Price Range: $10 / 4pk
Pairings: Salads, Goat Cheese, Grilled Chicken

Yuengling Lager

No doubt you’ve seen Yuengling in stores recently. This historic company is the second largest
micro-brewery in the U.S., and distribution continues to grow at a very steady pace. I first encountered Yuengling Lager while living in Pennsylvania and was pleasantly surprised to find a delicious crisp and clean Amber Lager.

The brewery is touted as America’s Oldest, dating back to 1829, and its tradition of producing fine-quality beer is clearly shown with their flagship brew.

Yuengling’s Amber Lager has a darker color than a standard American Style Lager but still maintains a very light, easily drinkable body and texture. This is a great beer for either warm or cool weather, with an unassuming, yet satisfying quality.

Yuengling boasts nothing special and nothing fancy. It’s just a great anytime beer for a really good price! I definitely recommend this for anyone looking to break out of the mold of the same old American Lager- the quality is that of some more expensive craft American Lagers, but with a price that rivals even the cheapest mass-produced beer on the market!

Brewery: Yuengling Brewing Company, Pottsville, Pennsylvania
ABV: 4.4%
Expect to pay: $6.00-$8.00 / 6pk
Pairings: Chicken Fajitas, Fried or Grilled Catfish, Pizza, Burgers, (goes well with just about anything!)

Magic Hat #9

This is a Pale Ale Style beer with extra spice (can you tell I like the spicy beers?). There are hints of Clove, Nutmeg, Allspice, combined with a nice balance of citrusy Apricot. Magic Hat’s #9 is wonderful on tap or bottled, and a must-try for new flavor seekers!

Magic Hat is a great brewery- They definitely are willing to experiment, and my Hat is off to them for that reason alone. There are a lot of other flavors (seasonal and year-round) that Magic Hat puts out, but #9 has become one of my absolute favorite, staple Magic Hat Brews.

There’s enough hoppiness to keep the beverage lively, and yet it’s balanced out with a nice light-medium body of spices.

This one is great for those just who want to test the waters beyond the typical American Lager or Pale Ale. While, not overly aggressive, #9 still holds enough intrigue for even the snobbiest of your self-proclaimed beer  connoisseur friends.

Brewery: Magic Hat, Burlington, Vermont
ABV: 5.10%
Expect to pay: $7.00-$9.00 / 6pk
Pairings: Zesty Chicken, Pizza Margarita, Smoked Salmon

Weyerbacher (why-er-bock-er) Merry Monks’ Belgian Style Golden Ale

Merry Monks is a Belgian Style Abby Tripel (think of a really stout Pale Ale). It has a really nice creamy texture and mouth-feel with very subtle hints of banana.

The traditional Belgian yeast is very apparent and gives the beer a very complex flavor, and very sweet as well. This has no real bitterness, and is a real pleasure to drink!

Merry Monks’ is a great cool weather Ale; it’s a very warming drink. You’ll notice an almost wine-like quality to it with a moderately dry finish. Overall, this is one of the sweeter, more robust, complex and thoughtful beers that I’ve been able to try, and I think you’ll really find a wonderfully similar experience.

*Extra tip- This beer is conditioned in the bottle (a bit of yeast and sugar is added at the time of bottling to give it that extra creamy carbonation) Try storing a couple of bottles out of sunlight for a few months (at around 55-60 degrees)– This conditioning process helps keeps it fresh and will continue to mature the Ale, allowing for a drier and crisper characteristic.

Brewery: WeyerBacher, Easton, PA
ABV: 9.3%
Expect to pay: $10.00-$12.00 / 6pk
Pairings: Fresh Baked Bread, Rueben Sandwich, Pipe Tobacco and a good book

New Belgium Ranger IPA

I’ll go ahead and warn you, you’ll be seeing a couple of New Belgium’s brews on this blog posting, and there’s a good reason!

Leading off the New Belgium Brews, and finishing off this first set of “lighter” brews, is the Ranger IPA, an American Style India Pale Ale.

Ranger is an experience in delicious Floral, Citrus, and Fruity Hops. This beer is at a reasonable 70 IBU, so right at a good place for a medium IPA.

The beer starts hoppy, has a decent balance of medium/caramel malts, and then has a nice, dry finish with the zest and pop of Citrus Hops again.

The color is a beautiful amber-tone, the body is just malty enough to handle the trifecta of hops. For IPA and Hop lovers, this is a beer that’s easy to have just one more!

Like many of New Belgium’s brews, there’s nothing super [insert adjective here] about this splendid IPA, it’s just really good.

Brewery: New Belgium, Fort Collins, Colorado
ABV: 6.5%
Expect to pay: $8.00-$10.00 / 6pk
Pairings: Burgers, Ribs, Creamy Potato Soup, Grilled Trout

Givin It All Away Day!

Hello Lovelies! Want some free stuff!?
Why yes, YES YOU DO! Especially this:

Creamy Frosted Vanilla Body Cream, Body Lotion, & Spray Set

My beautiful friend, Jamie Walker, is a sales rep for Mary Kay (AND a Hapkido instructor, AND a model, AND an actress) and is one of the few women I know to have been successful selling from home! I asked her a few questions so we could find out some tips and get to know her better.

1. How did you begin your journey as a self employed woman?

I honestly feel like it has always been my calling to be self-employed. (Even though in my younger days, I had NO idea what that meant!) I've been called an entrepreneur by several people. Mary Kay was really my first venture into becoming a self-employed woman. I came into the company to get my products at cost, but I had so much fun teaching other women about skin care and how to apply makeup, it just became part of my life. I am also an aspiring actress and model, plus I teach martial arts and dance at Precious Minutes Learning Center and Toccoa and Clarkeville YMCA.

2. What do you feel is crucial to your success? Do you have any advice for someone looking to go
into business as an entrepreneur?

The most crucial aspect of my success is sheer determination and self-discipline. When you are self-

employed, it is very easy to slack off on what you SHOULD be doing because you don't have a boss
standing over you. If you want to be financially successful, you must be able to make yourself do what is
necessary, whether you feel like it or not. My best advice for anyone wanting to go into business for
his/herself is to never give up and always strive to improve yourself--whether it is job-specific skills or just
your time-management!

3. What is your favorite part of the Christmas season?

I love the Christmas lights and choosing gifts for my friends and family!

Prego Fashion!

I bought this dress at H&M two years ago for a whopping $8 to wear to a Festivus for the Restivus party my exhusband I used to throw. I had a significantly harder time then keeping it to stay up then! This dress totally worked as a prego dress because the waist hem is just under my chest.

My baby bump made the dress a bit shorter than I would have thought decent so I added the black tights. I originally went after my footed tights and was a bit disappointed when I couldn't find them but these ended up being absolutely perfect! I think my feet showing complimented my shoulders being bare.

I was given this absolutely gorgeous wrap from a couple who traveled to Israel last Christmas. It's big enough to act as a shawl but light enough to wear as a scarf. It's literally one of my top 10 favorite accessories!

And the shoes? Why, they're MAGNIFICENT, you say? Oh how NICE of you to notice! My lover bought them because he's most amazing. They are BCBG and I got them on sale last week at Ross... only the bestest store in the whole wide world.

This necklace is so very special to me. Brett's mother was in a beauty pageant in the 70's and WON, of course! The pendant she was given says "The Miss America Pageant" and on the back is inscribed "Miss Walhalla Pageant". I can't believe he gave it to me... the nostalgia and rarity and memory surrounding it is so spectacular. I've added his mothers crucifix that she wore daily to the chain... even though it seemed an odd thing to do. Well anyway... the chain seemed too thin to wear solo so I wrapped it around a set of solid black pearls I have and voila!

I linked up to:

Momma Go Round

Masq(less)erade!

I went to a masquerade themed tea party last night with my frands. I didn't get one damn photo of  us with out masks. FAIL, Dahlin. But I did get this one:

In Sadie's defense, she didn't know about the dresses. Communication mishap... but her ability to put together a rockin casual yet appropriate outfit wins again. I want to note how much I love these lovely ladies. For one, we're freakin hilarious. I laughed sooo much. We're like the Golden Girls... only better. Yes, I dare say so. I find my confidence and myself when I am surrounded by these beauties. As a matter of fact I found myself in this extremely awkward situation last night that I would  NOT have made it through without their presence. (I ran into the best friend of my abusive ex's new girlfriend. I had no idea who she was but she knew me. ACK! More on that later.)

Okay, so seriously, I was mega impressed with the decor (and some of the food) last night! The hostess, Andrea, made this killer chandelier using a strand of lights and a hula hoop (yessss... a HULA HOOP). DIY to the glorious maxxx.

Here are the handmade snowflake ornaments she made from glitter and toilet paper rolls. She hung them on branches that she gathered herself and slightly spray painted white.

THE BEST TREAT EVERRRRR

She made these little bites that reminded me of a Take 5 candy bar. THEN she told me how to make them.

Take one square pretzel, top with a Rolo, place a pecan on top & heat in the oven at 250 for 4 minutes then just press the pecan down into the Rolo.

She planned and decorated this entire affair for only $1.

She wins.

Pre-Natal Psht

Confession: I did not take a single prenatal vitamin during my first pregnancy. (and I'm not about to start now)

I just knew better for some reason. I'll admit, I didn't do my research (like you're supposed to) but I was extremely confident in my ability to feed myself appropriately as a pregnant woman. I was obsessed with our organic diet and all natural cleaning and bathing products. I also felt my age (ripe ol' 21) lent my breeding body more stability than older first time mothers that 'needed' help. Oh yes, and I had the help of a mother committed to informing me of my options. Here is evidence that I wasn't a fool:
my extremely healthy baby boy hours after his birth
However, being subjected to round two of every nurse, doctor, and nosey concerned women in my life asking if I had started taking prenatal vitamins set my already overwhelmed mind a flutter. To explain: I did not take responsibility for this pregnancy until the second trimester. Mostly because we weren't quite sure if I was prego or not but really we didn't even check because we were a bit scared of the reality. Couple that with a new, exciting, but barely 3 month relationship, intense therapy sessions, and bouts of intermittent anxiety freak outs... I just frankly thought I couldn't handle the truth. Then I felt so guilty that I did what seemed natural...I listened to the people who 'knew best' and I filled my prenatal vitamin prescription last week. I knew I hadn't been eating at all right the first trimester so in a moment of desperation I thought that maybe I could combat the pitiful eating habits of the first trimester with tons of mega vitamins for the second and third trimester. Though, I haven't taken a single one.

Here is why.

1. My eating habits have improved. For the first trimester it was all I could do to remember to eat once a day. At a very unhealthy 105 pounds (I'm 5'7... so that's at least 30 pounds underweight) I had been taking steps to getting healthy again. I had stopped smoking, abandoned my whiskey obsession, and started sleeping. Next on the 'to-do' list was start eating regularly. That fact made a good argument for the vitamins. I could take them while I got on back on track. Seriously, I've been told (and read) that it's never too late to start taking prenatal vitamins. In that case, why is it not too late to start eating healthy? We left our first appointment (after finding a healthy 15 week baby) and headed straight for the grocery store. I stocked up on every variety of fruit and veggies I could find, our fave organic yogurts, crackers, nuts, and fish. I already knew that some nuts such as almonds and walnuts and certain types of fish like naturally raised salmon were excellent sources of Omega-3, a crucial nutrient for a fetus' developing brain. I've now found out that grass fed beef is another great source of Omega-3. Which I'm thrilled about.

2. This is what came in the bag with my Prenatal Plus Tablet prescription:

*and if I could take a "WTF Moment" here... why on Earth would something that is so healthy and vital for every pregnancy require a prescription?*

AND

*there was not a single list of the vitamins this drug is made  up of*

Accompanying these horse pills (that smelled terrible, btw) were not one, but TWO pages of instructions, warnings, side effects, precautions, warnings, and drug interactions.

I'm not one to judge, I am also certainly the first to admit my ignorance... but one particular line really ticked me off. After a list of side effects (constipation, diarrhea, rash, severe dizziness, trouble breathing... along with 'this is not a complete list of side effects') was this: If your doctor has prescribed this drug, remember that he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Dude, this set my argumentative, confrontational, stubborn side on edge. (and this blog is proof, eh?) My doctor hasn't sat with me once to discuss my nutritional habits nor to my knowledge done any blood work to test for deficiencies.

My concern is this. I've never been able to take a multivitamin because I literally overdose on some of the vitamins and they make me sick. What if I am getting plenty of nutrients from my 5 (well, at least 3) food-group stacked meals a day? Does the benefit of the drug (NOT vitamin according to the paperwork) outweigh the potential danger of overdosing my body... and my baby? One thing I've learned, just because it's a vitamin doesn't mean it's safe.

From what I've read so far prenatal vitamins are pushed on pregnant women for three major reasons: most don't get enough calcium, iron, or folic acid.

Here is where I've learned to get those vitamins. Fresh, raw, high quality vegetables are the best sources.

Calcium: dark green leafy vegetables, get plenty of sunlight & vitamin D as it can help with the absorption of calcium, milk, cheese (duh)

Iron: high quality grass fed red meat (there are other sources, but this one works for me just fine!)

Folic Acid: spinach, asparagus, okra, beans, green leafy vegetables

So I'm going to do more research and get back to you when I learn more. I should note I got most of my research from online sources such as Dr. Mercola, Wellness.com, and Naturopathic.org and that I AM NOT A DOCTOR. So do your own research, too.

Quote Book, literally

I have this little super awesome note book I got for hella cheap (like 2 bucks I think) at Pier One during Christmas a few years ago.

I held on to it for a period of time before coming up with a perfect use for it: a quote book. The little forget me not elephant is just too cute and perfect for this purpose!

You see, I have the pleasure of being surrounded by some pretty hilarious people. You won't believe some of the words that come out of the mouths of my friends. I decided instead of reminiscing being the only way to remember them, I'd just log them. I also log quotes I find pertinent to my current state of mind and such, like this one:

Here's some of my fave's from the past 6 years gone by...
*names have been sorta changed to protect the guilty*

It all started with this one. We were sitting around the dining room table (partying, of course) and someone knocked at the front door. My confused girlfriend got up and answered it but seemed really nervous. She laughed after she let our (new) friend in and when we asked her about why she had been so nervous she replied,

"The only people who use the front door are people who don't know us that well.
Like family."
- Lizzbeth 11:39 PM February 25, 2005

"You melted my heart and tightened my jeans."
or better yet
"Daughter lock up your mothers. It's time for cookies and MILF."
-Brando March 2009

"You're like my straight friend who understands the power of a pretty boy."
-unclaimed 3/29/10

"Whatever happened to old America with the pitchforks and fire? I would SO be in that crowd!"
-Lizzbeth 3/20/10

"Today is the solar eclipse." -Christan
"Grand. Unless I have a virgin to sacrifice it's of no use to me."
-Sadie 11/25/11

and a funny convo between friendlies:

"I'm a nice person." -Robin
"No you're not." -Lori
"No. I'm not." -Robin
"You pretend to be a nice person around
people who don't know you that well." -Lori
